Warzone Eternal: An ADHD Gamer’s Perspective

Warzone Eternal is (in my opinion) an ADHD Friendly Miniature’s Game!

Millions of people have Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), and I am one of those people! If you’re like me, you may struggle when playing miniatures games. Some common ADHD struggles can be remembering things, being able to focus for long periods of time, and hyperactivity such as fidgeting. I have found Warzone Eternal to be a very enjoyable game like someone with ADHD.

One common thing I struggle with for most mini’s games that I play is remembering what powers and abilities my units have. That’s not a problem in Warzone! Instead of having to look back in the book when I forget or feel like I need to memorize all the abilities and powers of me and my opponents’ units and abilities, I can just flip the unit card over and see all my units’ abilities listed on the back. I like playing different factions. Imperial and Mishima are two of my favorites, and I struggle to remember what all the abilities across both armies do. I like that I can just flip the cards over to remember what abilities each unit has. For the Shadow Walkers, who have two cards, I’ve put them in sleeves and taped the two cards together. This way, when I want the definitions then I can again flip the card over and unfold the second card so that all the data is easily available.

There are also lots of resources and cards that the community has made for Assets, which I find help by keeping what I have directly in front of me, so I don’t forget about it. Community cards have been made for all the General Assets, as well as for the Dark Legion and Corporate Factions. I use them all the time whenever I need an Asset – I set them out with my unit cards, so I know which ones belong to what models.

Warzone Eternal also has mechanics that make it easy to learn and remember! Warzone Eternal units each have two Actions, one two-inch Reposition, and a Reaction. I like to remember this by thinking 3,2,1,1/2. Each model gets 3 things, 2 actions, 1 Reaction, a 2-inch Reposition, 2 inches is half a standard model’s movement which is usually 4 inches.

Another thing that can be a struggle in minis games is staying focused for long periods of time. The Warzone Eternal rule book is relatively short, and the table of contents makes it easy to find what you need. The rulebook also has lots of different colors and pictures which help to make it more engaging. I personally really like the Imperial “family photo” in the rulebook. Once you know what you’re doing, Warzone Eternal games can usually be finished in around an hour. Competitions for Warzone Eternal also have one-hour rounds, so in my experience Warzone Eternal is a miniature game that can be quick to play. I enjoyed playing in the Eternal Champions tournament at Adepticon this Spring, and in part because of the time limit, I was able to stay focused on each game, and enjoyed my interactions with the community members I got to play with.

Lastly, I often get restless and fidget while waiting for my turn. Warzone Eternal is a roll-under D20 system, so there are dice for rolling which I find helps. I like either rolling the dice or fidgeting with them in my hand. You can also bring things to fidget with if you like! I brought a slow rise fidget that looked like a stick of butter to fidget with at the Eternal’s tournament. I put it in my miniatures case and used it to help me focus as needed during my matches. Those who knew me thought it was funny and the people I played against didn’t say anything about the fidget. I plan to play in the tournament again this year and will be bringing a fidget with me again. Currently, I like to bring Ziploc bags with different fidgets when I go and play in the community so I can share with others if they like.

In my experience, Warzone Eternal has a welcoming community of patient people and community-made resources. It has easy to understand mechanics and cards designed for quick referencing during gameplay, and the potential for quick games that are fun to play and give you the full experience. I highly recommend Warzone Eternal as game that I, someone with ADHD, find fun, fast, and easy to understand.
